Herne Bay put recent heavy defeats behind them to trounce basement side Shoreham and move within 6 points of the play-offs.

Having suffered a heavy defeat at Lewes last week Herne Bay needed to bag all the points against a Shoreham side struggling to come to terms with life at Step 4 in the non league pyramid writes Peter Guise. The points were duly bagged even though the performance may not have been what they wanted. Sometimes though it is necessary to win ugly.

The first half may not have been particularly appetising in silky smooth football terms as Bay played no risk defending to combat their visitors' direct style. Even so, Herne Bay went ahead in the 20th minute thanks to Alex Mulrooney-Skinner's neat finish. 14 minutes later they might have been pegged back but George Gaskin sent his spot kick the wrong side of Ben Hunter's right hand upright.

After the break, Herne Bay manufactured more room to play and the more familiar passing game returned to pay dividends but not after Roddy had equalised for the visitors with an excusitely executed free kick up and over the wall. Bay had to up their game and they responded well. Junior Aikhionbare wriggled through in the 75th minute only to be pulled down in the area. Nassim Dukali duly despatched the spot-kick. 4 minutes later, good inter-play between Dukali and Tom Carlton saw the latter slot home to increase Bay's lead. Then, with 4 minutes remaining Aikhionbare again threatened and Whitehead again pulled him back. It earned Bay a second penalty and Whitehead a second yellow for which an automatic red was flourished. Dukali chose the opposite corner into which to place his 12 yard kick and Bay were home, happy and hosed.

After the game, skipper Jono Richardson told Radio Cabin 94.6 FM, "It became very frustrating, stop start, and didn't allow us to have our normal flow on the game. On the basis of the last few results it's important for us to get the three points. We had to get something today , they had a clear game plan to frustrate us, but we cracked on in the second half and got the three points which was the most important thing".
